Description
The Flavour Profile
There's something special about a light roast Kenya coffee, and Toroton is no exception. Grown by the smallholder farmers of the Toroton Farmers' Cooperative Society in the Nandi Hills, this single origin coffee bursts with cranberry, blackberry and grapefruit, rounded off with a honeycomb sweetness that lingers long after the last sip. It's the kind of cup that makes you sit up and pay attention.
Grown above 1,800 metres, the cherries here mature slowly in cool highland conditions, and that slow ripening is exactly what builds this coffee's complexity — the higher the altitude, the denser the bean, and the denser the bean, the brighter and more layered the flavour. Toroton's SL28, SL34, Ruiru11 and Batian varietals are prized for bright, juicy acidity, and the fully washed process strips away the fruit before drying, leaving a clean, vivid cup where every note comes through with real clarity. Roasted light, none of that is lost — a light roast preserves the origin character rather than masking it with roast flavour, so what you're tasting is Nandi County itself, not the fire. Expect a light-medium body with a crisp, juicy mouthfeel and a lively, wine-like acidity that dances across the palate.
Drinking it black? This is where Toroton really sings. The cranberry and blackberry notes come forward first, followed by a zesty grapefruit brightness and a gentle honeycomb sweetness underneath. Brew it as a V60, Aeropress or filter coffee to let that clarity shine — this is a coffee built for methods that highlight acidity and nuance.
Drinking it with milk? The sweetness rounds out beautifully and the fruit notes soften into something more like blackberry jam with a citrus twist — still bright, just a little gentler. Lovely as a light filter with a splash of milk if you want the fruit character without quite so much punch.
However you brew it, this fresh roasted, single origin Kenyan coffee is roasted to order by Nick in our roastery, just outside Canterbury — it never sits on a shelf waiting for you. Fancy a kilo? You'll save 10% buying in bulk, and we're always happy to grind it to suit your brewing method — just let us know at checkout.
The Little Details
Toroton is grown by the Toroton Farmers' Cooperative Society, a group of over 950 smallholder farmers based in the Nandi Hills of Nandi County, in Kenya's Rift Valley — a region better known for tea than coffee, but one that produces genuinely exceptional cups thanks to its rich red volcanic soils and cool, rainy climate. This lot is a peaberry (PB) grade, grown above 1,800 metres above sea level from the SL28, SL34, Ruiru11 and Batian varietals, and fully washed to produce a clean, bright cup.
About the Process
At Toroton, farmers hand-pick only the ripest cherries and deliver them to the factory the same day, where they're carefully sorted before pulping. A disc pulper fitted with three sets of discs removes the outer skin while protecting the delicate parchment layer underneath — the first step in preserving everything that makes this coffee special.
Once pulped, the coffee ferments for 16 to 24 hours, giving naturally occurring enzymes time to break down the remaining sugars and mucilage. This is a critical stage — get it right and you unlock clarity and sweetness; rush it and you lose both. The parchment is then thoroughly washed and soaked before moving to drying.
From there, the coffee is spread across raised drying tables and turned regularly by hand, drying slowly over 7 to 15 days depending on the weather. This patient, closely monitored drying is what locks in the bright, fruit-forward character Kenyan coffees are famous for.
Behind every cup of Toroton is a cooperative built on genuine community — an elected farmer board, pre-harvest financing to help members through the season, and over three decades of shared investment in doing this properly. That care is in every sip.
