Smooth & Balanced, Maui Mellow: 100% Maui-Grown Coffee

Soft, rounded, and naturally sweet, Maui Mellow is a coffee to settle into. Roasted medium-light, this 100% Maui-grown coffee offers a smooth, balanced cup with gentle brightness—welcoming to newcomers and seasoned specialty drinkers alike. It shines as espresso, especially in a cortado or other milk-based drinks.

Maui Coffee Returns

In 2023, the Lāhainā fires devastated Maui, destroying much of the town and displacing residents. The fires also burned the fields at Maui Grown Coffee, one of Hawaiʻi’s largest coffee farms at the time. With our customers’ support, we raised more than $45,000 in just two weeks, contributing the funds to Lahaina Strong and the Maui Humane Society.

As rebuilding began, Maui Grown Coffee joined forces with a large-scale farming operation in Central Maui, whose mission is to transform former sugarcane lands into a diversified farming hub and strengthen food security for Hawaiʻi. Together, they set out to restore the island’s coffee industry.

The return of Maui-grown coffee is one part of a much larger recovery. It reflects the work of people planting, tending, and rebuilding—and gives us another reason to value the coffee in our cups and the communities behind it.

What Is Maui Coffee Known For?

Maui coffee is known for a comforting, easy-drinking cup: nutty, creamy, and gentle, with gentler fruit notes. It is great for espresso-based drinks, and just as enjoyable as a straight shot. For those who prefer a mellow coffee with nuttier tones, it’s a welcoming place to start.

Maui’s coffee production includes larger commercial plantings as well as smaller Upcountry operations. The dominant varieties cultivated on Maui are Caturra, Catuai, and the distinctive, small-beaned Maui Mokka. On larger plantings suited to mechanical harvesting, specialized equipment shakes the branches to release coffee cherries. Sorting follows: cherries can be separated by flotation before further processing.

A Taste of Haleakalā

Grown on the slopes of Haleakalā, Maui Mellow combines Catuai and Yellow Caturra, processed using the washed method. The fruit is removed before the beans are dried, giving us a clean foundation for a roast that highlights sweetness and clarity.

We roast these Maui coffee beans medium-light, preserving their gentle brightness while developing the rounded character that gives Maui Mellow its name. Natural notes of roasted nut butter, caramel, and vanilla are brightened by soft citrus and a smooth chamomile finish.

Each bag is fresh roasted on Hawaiʻi Island with the roast date stamped on it. Brew it as pour-over or drip for an easygoing morning cup, or pull it as espresso for a cortado or other milk-based drink.

Blind Assessment

In its blind assessment, Coffee Review gave Maui Mellow 92 points and described it as sweetly balanced and gently fruit-toned, with golden raisin, roasted almond, orange blossom, milk chocolate, and red apple in aroma and cup, and a clean, lingering finish of cocoa, sweet citrus, and toasted nut.
