Our first year working with Alonzo Gaspar Juan, and a lovely introduction to his coffee. El Rancho is a great reflection of classic Guatemalan specialty coffee, with a clean, balanced profile, gentle sweetness, and a rounded finish.

Behind the coffee

El Rancho is a six-hectare farm in the hills of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, owned by Alonzo Gaspar Juan. The farm takes its name from the ranches that once housed coffee pickers during the busy harvest season in Concepción Huista.

Alonzo grows this lot entirely from Caturra, with coffee planted beneath the shade of Chalum and Gravilea trees. It's a small farm with a clear focus on one variety, grown in the highlands of one of Guatemala's established coffee-producing regions.

Alonzo is also part of the El Sendero Cooperative, a farmer-led organisation founded to give local growers better financial support and more control over how their coffee is sold.

Today, the cooperative supports hundreds of producers with financing, training, and access to farming resources. It's an important part of the wider community behind coffees like El Rancho, helping individual growers connect their work with a more reliable path to market.
