Honduras – From Undervalued Coffee to Specialty Quality
As recently as the 1990s, coffee from Honduras was considered a low-quality product, mainly used in inexpensive blends. Although the country had ideal natural conditions—fertile soils, suitable elevation, and a favorable microclimate—a lack of processing infrastructure and quality control meant Honduran coffee continued to have a poor reputation.
The situation was made worse by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which destroyed 80% of the country's agriculture. In the years that followed, good beans were smuggled into neighboring Guatemala and sold as Guatemalan coffee, while lower-quality lots remained labeled “Honduras.”
Fortunately, the beginning of the 21st century brought major change. The development of local cooperatives and investment in infrastructure helped Honduras quickly join the ranks of the leading Arabica producers in Central America. By 2015, the country was producing more than 5 million bags a year, ranking seventh in the world.
Intibucá – The Heart of SHG Coffee Production
Honduras SHG (Strictly High Grown) coffee comes from the mountainous region of Intibucá, whose name means “high plateau.” The farms are located at elevations close to 2,000 meters above sea level, allowing the coffee cherries to ripen more slowly and develop a higher concentration of sugars.
The farms are run mainly by small-scale farmers—95% are family farms, most of which are under 2 hectares. Coffee farming is not only an economic foundation for life here but also part of the region's tradition and culture.
Flavor Profile and Character of Honduras SHG Coffee
Arabica Honduras SHG is a coffee with an exceptionally well-balanced character. Its low, lemony acidity pairs beautifully with its natural sweetness. In the cup, you'll find notes of cranberry, lemon, and pineapple, which mingle with a honeyed, caramel finish. Its light body makes for an exceptionally pleasant and delicate brew that still has depth.
This coffee works beautifully with pour-over methods, but also as a classic espresso. In every preparation, it showcases its fruity freshness and subtle sweetness.
Why Choose Honduras SHG Coffee?
- grown high in the mountains—slow ripening adds depth of flavor
