Why Arabica Ethiopia Yirgacheffe?

Ethiopia is not only the birthplace of coffee, but also the largest coffee producer in Africa. It also
boasts the title of Africa's largest coffee consumer. This exotic nation produces some of the
most diverse and sophisticated coffees in the world. Only Arabica coffee is grown in Ethiopia, but the variety of cultivars, many of which still grow wild and undiscovered, is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Coffee was probably first exported from Ethiopia as early as the 17th century, although trade did not become significant until the 19th century. Today, the importance of coffee to the country's economy cannot be overstated. The coffee industry is estimated to employ around 15 million Ethiopians, and coffee accounts for nearly 70% of all export revenue.

Three “production systems” are used for coffee in Ethiopia. The first is “coffee forests,” where local people harvest berries from wild-growing shrubs. Coffee gardens are cultivated on small plots (usually measured in shrubs rather than hectares) alongside other crops, and there are also coffee plantations. The vast majority of coffee in the country is grown in small gardens.

Coffee in Ethiopia was traditionally dry processed, but washed processing is becoming increasingly popular, and as much as 50 percent of coffee is processed this way. This processing method highlights the delicate floral notes for which coffee from this country is known.

Yirgacheffe is part of the Sidamo region, but the outstanding coffees from here are so well known that the area has been designated a microregion and trademarked by the Ethiopian government. At first glance, the hills of Yirgacheffe appear densely forested, but in reality this is a densely populated region, with many villages on the hills where “garden coffee” is grown.

Arabica Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee from our roastery has an exceptional flavor and aroma. It makes a delicious espresso, but brewed using alternative methods, it reveals its wild character and depth of flavor.
