Pour Over or Full Immersion?

Understandably, someone who hasn't dealt with the topic of coffee machines can't do anything with these two terms. The explanation is simple: pouring and full immersion are two common methods of brewing coffee in a coffee maker.

Pour Over

Here, a previously filled coffee filter is used during the brewing process. The hot water is now poured into the filter, and the dripping coffee is collected in the container. So this method is very reminiscent of a classic filter coffee maker.

Full immersion

You won't find coffee filters here. The ground coffee is poured directly into the container and then filled with hot water. The water and coffee are now separated through the press.

The various coffee makers at a glance

Coffee makers also vary depending on whether the coffee is brewed using the pour or full immersion method. Four different products can be identified here: Chemex, French Press, AeroPress, and manual filters.

Chemex

This is probably the most visually appealing of the various coffee machines. Chemex is made of glass or wood and can be used to brew wonderfully aromatic coffee. This product is part of the pour method.

If you want to prepare coffee in Chemex, you will first need freshly ground coffee beans and a very fine filter paper. Put the powder in a strainer and pour hot water. A rule of thumb is one coffee cup with one tablespoon of powder. You should also make sure you only fill the coffee filter with enough water to cover the coffee grounds. Larger amounts can cause the brewing process to be too fast, greatly affecting aroma and taste. Once the water has flowed through the coffee filter, the coffee is ready to be enjoyed.

French Press

The French press enjoys absolute cult status. Bodum has released its first model in at least 1974 and was able to significantly increase the popularity of this coffee maker. The classic glass design of the French press is attractive and attractive to every household. At the same time, however, many stainless steel versions are also available for purchase online. At first glance at the French media, it was clear that this was part of a fully immersive approach.

For this, coarsely ground beans are required, which are then loaded into a French press. About 70 grams of French medium coffee beans should be used for one liter of water. Then fill the container with hot water. The mixture must now sit for about five minutes before the sieve attachment can be attached and the powder can be slowly pressed towards the bottom.

AeroPress

AeroPress contains elements of pour and full immersion, with the latter predominant. AeroPress consists of a lower container and an upper container. Pour about two tablespoons of powder per cup into this upper container before filling with warm water. Now the coffee steeps for about a minute. The lid with the filter inserted can then be closed and the coffee poured. For this, the AeroPress is placed upside down on the cup. As a "starting material" for preparing with the AeroPress, you can use freshly ground coffee or grind the beans yourself. These electric and manual coffee grinders make it easy.

The hand filter

The manual filter is reminiscent of a classic filter coffee machine but without the mechanical and electronic components. Manual filters are mostly made of china or ceramic to ensure certain taste neutrality. What is special about the manual filter is, of course, its variable availability, as it is possible to brew not only a single cup, but also larger quantities.

The operation is extremely simple. Place the hand filter on the coffee mug or pot, insert the filter paper, and fill with powder. Now, gradually pour hot water into the coffee filter until you reach the desired amount. So manual filters are clearly part of the classic brewing method.
