Why Arabica Ethiopia Sidamo?

Ethiopia is not only the birthplace of coffee, but also the largest coffee producer in Africa. It also holds the title of Africa's largest coffee consumer. This exotic nation produces some of the most diverse and refined coffees in the world. Only Arabica coffee is grown in Ethiopia, but the variety of cultivars, many of which still grow wild and undiscovered, is unmatched worldwide.

Coffee was probably first exported from Ethiopia as early as the 17th century, although trade did not become significant until the 19th century. Today, the importance of coffee to the country's economy cannot be overstated. The coffee industry is estimated to employ around 15 million Ethiopians, and coffee accounts for nearly 70% of all export earnings.

Three coffee “production systems” are used in Ethiopia. The first is “coffee forests,” where local people harvest the cherries of wild-growing shrubs. Coffee gardens are grown on small plots (usually measured in shrubs rather than acres) alongside other crops, as well as on coffee plantations. The vast majority of the country's coffee is grown in small gardens.

Coffee in Ethiopia was traditionally dry processed, but washed processing is becoming increasingly popular. As much as 50 percent of coffee is processed this way. This processing method helps highlight the delicate floral notes for which coffee from this country is known.

Sidamo (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe) is one of Ethiopia's three main coffee regions. It is known for excellent climate conditions, thanks to elevations between 1500 and 2200 m above sea level, abundant rainfall, optimal temperatures, and fertile soil. Because conditions in the region are excellent but varied, Sidamo consists of many subregions, each with its own distinctive flavor profile.

Our roastery's Arabica Ethiopia Sidamo delights with a flavor full of nuts and chocolate, balanced by a pleasant citrus acidity.
