Description

Specialty Coffee | Country of Origin: Honduras

Honduras is a suitable place to grow coffee. The soil, climate, and conditions in Honduras are similar to those in neighboring countries. Honduras produces a wide range of quality coffees, from Central American blender coffee at lower costs to high-quality specialty lots that rival coffees from more popular Central American origins. This particular coffee is more complex than its HG counterpart, making it a specialty coffee.

In the past, coffee growers in Honduras marketed their beans in Guatemala, where they sold them at a higher price because of Guatemala’s reputation for coffee. After government taxes on coffee exports began to affect the coffee business, the country stimulated production and dramatically improved coffee quality. Since then, demand has grown, and selling coffee across the border has become unnecessary. Today, coffee producers and the government of Honduras have made improving coffee quality their mission. Laws offering tax incentives to coffee producers have been passed, and highways have been built to provide access to remote coffee-growing regions.

SHG (Strictly High Grown) indicates that this coffee was grown at an altitude of about 1,350 meters. Coffee grown at a higher altitude and lower temperature produces fruit that ripens more slowly and a denser bean, creating a more desirable specialty coffee. This classification is superior to HG.

EP (European Preparation) indicates that the green beans are hand-sorted to remove any defective beans and foreign matter.

SCA Score: Quality Certification in the Coffee Industry

The SCA score of 83 for Honduras Altura SHG EP confirms its specialty coffee profile and the careful work behind every lot. In Honduras, the combination of fertile soils, mountain climate, and an increasingly refined processing tradition has transformed the country from a Central American “secret” into a respected origin for clean, balanced, and surprisingly expressive coffees.
