Description

Peru is located in western South America. The Pacific Ocean borders its coast, and it shares borders with Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, and Bolivia and Chile to the southeast. It covers an area of 1.28 km² and has an estimated population of 32.51 million. Coffee production in Peru is based on smallholder farms, with thousands of families committed to and dependent on its cultivation. Coffee provides employment for more than 223,000 people. Peru's topography is defined by its mountainous terrain, which includes the Andes, the Cordillera Blanca, and the Cordillera Huayhuash, the latter two being the country's highest peaks. Peru has 39 ecosystems, which can be grouped into four regions: Tropical Rainforest, Yunga, Andean, and Coastal. Each region has distinct characteristics that are reflected in the cup profiles of its coffees. The soils where coffee is grown in Peru are mainly volcanic and have excellent organic properties that support cultivation and coffee plant growth. Peru has varied climates due to its diverse geography and is influenced by the Andes mountain range. The coastal area has an arid subtropical climate, while the Amazon region has a humid climate with rainfall throughout the year, which benefits coffee plant growth. Average temperatures in the country range from 20°C to 30°C, depending on the geographic region.

The coffee-growing region of Cajamarca is located on the eastern edge of the western range of the Andes. The Cajamarca region has a population of 201,329 and an area of 33.2 km². Cajamarca has 10 coffee-growing districts, home to more than 12,438 families engaged in coffee farming. In total, the region has 25,740 hectares devoted to coffee cultivation. The varieties most widely grown in Cajamarca are Caturra, Catimor, and Typica. Cajamarca ranks third among Peru's coffee-growing regions.

Coffee is grown in tropical rainforest, and is 100% organic, from farms using specific agronomic management practices characterized by soil conservation and methods that emulate ecological processes.
