Description

Guatemala is known for its history and the quality of coffee it offers the world. Coffee beans were
introduced to the country in 1773 by Jesuit priests. Years later, coffee was offered as a consumer
product and sometimes as medicine. Guatemalan coffee did not gain international recognition until
1870, when it began to be exported amid a commercial economic crisis. Since then, coffee has become
one of the country's main commodities and a primary source of income for its economy.
Today, the coffee sector supports more than 115,000 people and families who are responsible for
national production, and also provides jobs to many others, directly and indirectly, during the harvest.
The coffee they offer is mostly washed Arabica. Guatemala currently ranks ninth among coffee
exporters.
The country has several regions that produce different coffee qualities due to factors such as altitude,
climate, soil type, and temperature. These regions are San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Atitlán, Cóban,
Acatenango, Fraijanes, parts of Chiquimula, and Jutiapa. One of the regions best known for
coffee exports is Acatenango.
Acatenango is considered the birthplace of coffee in Guatemala because it was the first city
where coffee was introduced. One major advantage is that the area has volcanic soil, which provides
higher mineral levels for coffee production. Thanks to these benefits, coffee grown in the area has
richer flavors and sweeter aromas, with body and balanced acidity.
