Description

Guatemala is located at the western end of Central America. It borders Mexico to the north, Belize to the west, Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the southwest. It is the most populous country in Central America, with a population of 17.58 million and an area of 108,889 km².

Green coffee is one of Guatemala's top exports. Although many coffee growers sought alternative crops during the 2001 crisis, coffee has remained one of the country's top exports. Coffee cultivation in Guatemala consists of 90% Arabica and 10% Robusta. Coffee generates around 500,000 jobs in the country, and more than 300,000 hectares are used to grow it.

Guatemala's topography is mountainous, with a chain of 34 volcanoes running parallel to the Pacific Ocean. The ‘Coffee Belt’ lies along this chain. The location between two oceans and the volcanic soil create optimal conditions for coffee plants to grow. The mineral-rich soils of the mountain ranges that crisscross the country contribute to the high quality of Guatemalan coffee.

In Guatemala, the most suitable and beneficial temperature for coffee production is 16 to 32°C, in areas located 500 to 700 meters above sea level. Young plants should be shaded. In areas at 1,500 meters, plantations should be protected from cold northern winds.

The coffee-growing region of Huehuetenango has an estimated population of 89,516 and an area of 345,997 km². The region has 16 coffee-growing districts, which are home to more than 8,586 families cultivating over 17,127.97 hectares of Arabica coffee, including the Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí varieties. It ranks first among the country's coffee-growing regions.

Buenos Aires is a family farm comprising five members from the same area. It is grown according to organic certification and Fair Trade standards in the municipality of Cuilco, in the Oaxaqueño village of the department of Huehuetenango. Compost is used for fertilization, along with cultural practices to control pests and diseases, creating an ideal microclimate for producing high-quality coffee. The coffee is shade-grown at 1,850 meters above sea level, with mixed varieties including Caturra, Bourbon, and Catuaí.
