Description

Café Liza G1 – Kivu, Rwanda

From the Kivu region in western Rwanda comes Café Liza G1, a lot that reflects the vibrant identity and sustained growth of Rwandan coffee on the specialty scene. Processed at Liza Washing Station under the supervision of Jean Paul, this coffee combines tradition, technical precision, and carefully selected raw materials.

The blend brings together two varieties: Red Bourbon, known for its elegance and natural sweetness, and RAB C15, a locally developed variety that brings structure and resilience on the farm without sacrificing cup quality. Hand harvesting and rigorous sorting ensure that only cherries at optimal ripeness are used.

The process is washed, an emblematic method in Rwanda. It includes immediate pulping, controlled fermentation in tanks, and thorough washing with clean mountain water. The coffee is then dried on raised African beds, ensuring uniformity and preserving the clarity of its sensory profile.

In the cup, the result is deep and enveloping. Notes of cocoa stand out, providing a foundation and structure, complemented by the concentrated sweetness of raisins and a distinctive hint of red spices that adds complexity and character. It’s a warm profile with balanced acidity and an intense aromatic expression, ideal for those seeking a coffee with a strong personality.

It has a medium to medium-high body, moderate acidity, and a persistent aftertaste that leaves a sweet, spicy sensation on the palate. It works very well as espresso thanks to its structure and depth, and also makes a rich, complex cup with filter methods.

With a score of 86 points, Café Liza G1 confirms the potential of the Kivu region as one of the most interesting origins in East Africa. Available in a 250 g package, it’s an invitation to discover the distinctive character of contemporary Rwandan coffee.
