Finca Hartmann: Tradition, Biodiversity, and Innovation

Finca Hartmann, a family business run by the third generation, is considered a benchmark for outstanding quality and sustainability in Panama’s Santa Clara (Renacimiento) region. Located at an elevation of 1,300 to 2,000 meters on the border with Costa Rica, the property borders La Amistad National Park. The farm was founded in 1940 by Czech-born Alois Strašil (he changed his name to Alois Hartmann on the voyage to America because of the racism prevalent in America) and is now farmed by his five children and their families as an ecological refuge. More than 300 bird species benefit from cultivation beneath shade trees, which protects the natural cycle.

A special highlight of the selection is the Maragogype variety. It is known for its exceptionally large beans and has a complex, exotic flavor profile. We were able to secure a particularly well-processed lot. It stands out for its clear acidity and the subtle fermentation notes typical of a dry-processed coffee. Orange and citrus notes mingle with floral aromas reminiscent of rose blossoms, paired with a nicely integrated bitterness that brings hibiscus to mind. Overall, a wonderful and rare flavor experience in the cup.
