Description
It’s a pleasure and an honor to offer you a cup of such quality and freshness. Enjoying it is a guaranteed pleasure!
A small country, great coffee.
Kalico Burundi shares certain characteristics with other African countries when it comes to climate, agriculture, and the economy. Coffee plays a central role in the daily lives of Burundians.
Geography of Burundi
Burundi is a small country in the heart of Africa, with the distinction of having no access to an ocean. The country has a temperate equatorial climate because it sits on a high plateau with an average elevation of 5,577 feet. Burundi also borders the famous Lake Tanganyika, the continent’s second-largest lake and the world’s most fish-rich! Now turning toward tourism, the country protects its wildlife and plant life in numerous parks and protected reserves across its territory.
An Agricultural Nation
The country’s economy is largely rooted in rural life, and more specifically in livestock farming and agricultural exports. Half of Burundi’s GDP comes directly from agriculture, which supports 90% of the population. Farmers grow cotton and tea, but nearly 80% of exports are coffee. In fact, coffee is Burundi’s leading source of income. Production of this black gold is therefore a pillar of the country’s economic well-being. Today, it supports a growing number of men and women. Coffee farmers use very traditional methods. Kalico Bourbon is fully washed before being dried on raised beds for two weeks. Finally, it is aged in parchment for three months.
Kalico, a pure African coffee
Kalico is a treasure trove of flavors that everyone at our company loves. Even though its excellent SCA score is reassuring (82/84), we’ll try to explain why…
The strengths of Kalico coffee from Burundi
Kalico is the latest bean from the African continent that we’ve started roasting. When we began looking for a new coffee, several countries naturally caught our attention, but we have to admit that Burundi’s reputation intrigued us. At the cupping, the team was eager to judge the aromatic quality they had been promised. The first cup was warmly welcomed. Beautiful notes of tart citrus immediately burst across our palates at first contact. A gentle sweetness in the aftertaste revealed blackberry aromas that slowly faded away. What’s always surprising about African Arabicas is their softness and finesse, despite their high caffeine content.
Making room for Kalico on our shelves
Of course, launching a new bean is always a real challenge for us. Every coffee has to find its place in the hearts and coffee makers of our regulars. Before Kalico arrived, we needed to find a way for it to stand out, since our range was already extensive. First, we paired this bean with coffees from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania to put together an African gift set. It also joined our natural blend, New Guinea, and Costa Rica in our discovery set. Both offerings were an incredible success during the holiday season and brought Kalico into the spotlight.
In Conclusion
Burundi has found its place in our shop, and coffee lovers have been coming in regularly to get some. But it’s online that enthusiasm for this coffee has been most impressive. We often receive orders for several kilos from all over France. Ultimately, this leads us to believe that it’s a rare find online. Our roasting gives this nectar a balanced aromatic profile.
