Description

To expand our range of organic and fair-trade coffees, we chose beans grown in Honduras. This coffee, the true black gold of Central America, is balanced and has incomparable aromatic quality.

Honduras's past

Honduras has a coffee-growing tradition that benefits from many favorable factors thanks to its history and climate. The decision to increase the number of farms converted to organic and fair-trade production has paid off.

Historical background

Named by Christopher Columbus in 1502 after he emerged from a terrible storm, Honduras is a Central American country whose coffee quality is far too often underestimated.
A typical Central American country, like its neighbors El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, Honduras endured difficult periods of dictatorship and barely veiled domination by the United States for many years.

Agricultural background

In this very poor country, agriculture is a key pillar of the economy. A major exporter of agricultural products, Honduran farms employ a third of the population. Bananas, palm oil, and of course, coffee have historically been favored crops. For many years, agricultural production has enabled residents to make a living while also generating significant export revenue for the country. Although Honduras makes use of its access to the sea to develop its fishing industry, Hondurans mainly exploit their mineral-rich, extremely fertile soil.

The present

To select a bean, you need clear rules—and you need to stick to them.

Honduras's national standards

Local farmers have always grown only Arabica and, for many years, have reserved their production for export. A real asset to the economy of a country that has invested heavily in agriculture, coffee growing receives particular care. Organic farming techniques, drying methods, and fair-trade principles have enabled this crop to flourish while preserving its flavor. Today, Honduras has become the largest producer in Central America and will never neglect the quality of its beans.

Our standards

Despite difficult climate conditions (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and even drought), Honduras grows organic and fair-trade beans with a wonderfully rich aromatic sweetness. As with every search, our basic rule is to roast only 100% Arabica beans. To promote this little-known coffee, it had to be organic, and to inspire us to champion it during our tastings, it had to be fair trade.

The bean

Here’s what we do to get a perfect cup—it deserves a little effort on your part to enjoy it…

Its characteristics:

  • Plantations located between 1,500 and 2,000 meters above sea level
  • Sun-dried
  • Caffeine content: 1.32%
  • SHG grade
  • SCA score: 83

How we chose it

When we started looking for new origins to round out our coffee range, we knew we’d have to take a closer look at Honduras. Without really knowing the quality of what we would receive, our curiosity was already at its peak. We needed to stay consistent and find a bean that stood out and was as natural as possible. We selected an organically grown, fair-trade bean to add ethics and purity to the aromas in your cup.

How should you drink our Honduran coffee?

Its perfect body, with an intensity that’s neither too strong nor too light, will appeal to most of you. To preserve its aromatic finesse, we recommend making your cup with a BODUM French press. This method is perfect as long as you use the right amount of coffee for your press. This coffee is ideal for a perfect afternoon snack, and its pleasant acidity reminds us of a lemon meringue pie…
