Mexico loves its coffee
Mexican coffee has flourished because Mexicans have given a great deal to their coffee plants and received a great deal in return! Farmers often own small farms.
The beginnings of coffee in Mexico
Coffee first appeared in this Central American country in the 18th century. Brought first from the West Indies, coffee plants found fertile soil for cultivation in tropical areas of the country’s southern regions, near the border with Guatemala.
Today
Mexico has become a wonderful coffee-producing country. Despite facing fierce competition in agriculture, coffee production in Mexico is still among the ten largest in the world. The strength of its production lies in the many small farmers who have joined together in strong cooperatives. This approach enables the industry to remain competitive while producing quality coffee. Working with coffee plants requires such painstaking care that it calls for skilled labor, and much of the work is done by hand. Small farms are not necessarily less profitable than large ones.
Our roaster loves Mexico
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for this coffee. I love drinking it and sharing it with my friends.
Mexican Altura
The coffee we selected is organic Altura, certified by Max Havelaar, from the Chiapas region near the border with Guatemala. It grows at altitudes of 1,000 to 1,700 meters and is harvested between November and January. Every week, we receive bags of coffee from Mexico because it’s our best-selling single-origin coffee. All the specialty bulk retailers we work with offer Mexican coffee. All our partners who run gourmet or farm-produce stores report that this coffee, rated 81/83 by the SCA, tops their sales. Altura is hugely popular at all our trade shows and tasting events. In fact, Altura is regularly the most requested coffee. No matter the audience, Mexican coffee is always a resounding success.
Its aromas
Its woodsy flavor delights fans of bold coffee. Its balanced body gives it a beautifully lingering finish. Ideal after a meal, it pairs perfectly with desserts, especially chocolate cakes. Mexican coffee lovers often find it hard to drink coffee from anywhere else; it’s particularly addictive.
What’s more, its very mild acidity and very low caffeine content make this pure Arabica a treat you can enjoy to your heart’s content…
We love organic coffee and fair trade
We remain true to our commitments. We care deeply about how our favorite coffee is grown and how the people who tend to it are paid.
Organic coffee
Respect for nature is paramount to Mexican farmers, which is why we chose to work with people who use methods required by organic farming. To preserve their soil and their health, these coffee growers have chosen a more natural way to farm their crops. To be honest, organic Altura and conventional Altura taste the same; the only reason we roast coffee with an organic certification is that we want to do something for the planet.
Mexican producers
There are a great many small producers in Mexico. This is a major advantage for fair trade and ensures a better income for the local population. The coffee market accounts for a significant share of Mexico’s overall agricultural economy. Contributing in our own small way to the development of fair trade was an obvious choice for our brand.
