Description
Our curiosity sometimes leads us to make wonderful discoveries. Our selection deserved to be expanded with some surprising origins, and it was at high altitude, at the foot of Nepal’s peaks, that we found what we were looking for.
A coffee at the top
The birthplace of Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain, this country perched in the Himalayas has the distinction of being home to the roof of the world, Mount Everest. But it’s not just a mountain range: Nepal has many different regions and climates.
Growing coffee in the mountains.
Growing this coffee is challenging, as only 20% of the country’s total land area is arable. But it benefits from perfect irrigation thanks to the melting of the perennial snow. Rice remains a staple food. Firewood is essential for local residents, so deforestation is a problem, but people still find room to grow coffee trees. Nepalis became interested in coffee because they initially saw it as a source of income. They realized they had favorable growing conditions for extraordinary coffee and that it could help diversify their agriculture.
Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain: a little-known coffee?
As in most Asian countries, tea is a very popular drink in Nepal. The ritual surrounding tea is an institution, and until just a few years ago, it seemed unthinkable that coffee could find a place in this part of the world. It’s still difficult to avoid instant coffee in Kathmandu’s restaurants, but over time, establishments catering to tourists are beginning to understand the value of serving coffee grown locally. The rise of L’Everest Mountain became a problem in 2013 because demand skyrocketed, and coffee growers could no longer fill orders. We have to place our orders a year in advance to ensure we have Nepalese coffee all year long.
A wealth of aromas
When we decided to expand our selection of beans with rare coffees, we didn’t expect to be so captivated by this L’Everest Mountain.
Characteristics of Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain:
- It is grown at an altitude of 2,200–2,400 meters
- Its variety is called Catura
- It is harvested from November to January
- It is, of course, a washed coffee
- It is rated 85 by the SCA
A mountain of pleasure
Asian coffees, like Gayo Mountain, are pure Arabica and offer a very interesting range of aromas. They often deliver intense, concentrated flavors, and Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain is no exception. First tested in a Delonghi automatic bean-to-cup machine, this Nepalese coffee left our two roasters speechless. David and Grégoire had to try several more cups to analyze this complex coffee. They had tasted a huge variety of coffees before L’Everest Mountain, but this tasting marked a turning point. Its full body brings a high intensity that can be disconcerting. Its very subtle fruity aroma and lingering finish leave a long-lasting feeling of well-being. Of course, you wouldn’t brew L’Everest Mountain in a standard drip coffee maker. It’s for those who enjoy an intense brew.
The revelation of Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain at our shop
L’Everest Mountain is a little more expensive than average. When we decided to feature it as our coffee of the month at the shop, the cup was a little more expensive, too. But the immediate enthusiasm for these beans surprised us so much that we tried to find another bag as soon as possible, since we had only reserved 50 kg for the year. We never imagined it would be such a success. Unfortunately, we had to deprive our online customers of this nectar. Demand for original, high-quality coffees like this is enormous. We had to adapt to make it available to all our regular customers. It is an immense source of pride to be able to offer you Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain. Our goal has always been to popularize this style of coffee. Few artisan roasters can afford to include Nepal’s L’Everest Mountain in their selection. We wanted to sell it on our website! It was a deliberate choice on our part to roast it in quantity so we could offer it at a reasonable price.
