This coffee comes from Nanyuki, located in central Kenya, where smallholder farmers grow coffee at high altitudes, between 1,400 m and 2,000 m. Most farmers own no more than about 2 hectares of land. The natural conditions—nutrient-rich volcanic soil and ideal temperatures—are excellent for coffee trees.

Recent genetic tests have indicated that SL34 is a genetic mutation of Coffea A. Typica, while SL 28 comes from the Bourbon variety. Both SL 28 and SL34 subvarieties were initially developed in Kenya in the late 1930s at the Scott Agricultural Laboratories.

The flavor profile of SL-34 is characterized by complex citrus acidity and an intense body with a clean, sweet taste, while intense citrus acidity, excellent sweetness, and complex aromas are common characteristics of SL-28.
