Why Dark-Roasted Colombian Arabica?
Coffee began to be grown commercially in Colombia in the mid-1830s and remained the country’s main export throughout the 20th century. The mountainous terrain and tropical microclimate have helped Colombia earn a reputation for ideal growing conditions. As a result, Colombian coffees have established a globally recognized name.
Colombia is the world’s second-largest coffee producer. The importance of coffee to the country’s economy cannot be overstated. On average, 75 percent of the country’s production is exported around the world, and crops generate about 10–16 percent of agricultural GDP. Colombia is also the largest producer of washed Arabica. The bean-drying process is unique. Farmers spread the beans on the flat roofs of their homes to dry in the sun. Colombian coffee is highly diverse, and the cherries are harvested practically year-round, depending on the region. The main harvest takes place from October to February, with November and December as peak months. The country is renowned for high-quality coffee and exports about 12.5 million bags annually. A significant portion goes to the United States.
Medellín, known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” is Colombia’s second-largest city and the capital of the department of Antioquia – the birthplace of coffee in Colombia and its largest growing region. Coffees from Antioquia are known for their medium-bodied profiles, which are generally less fruity and wine-like than those from other regions. They make for a smooth, well-balanced cup that can be enjoyed any time of day.
Dark-roasted Colombian Excelso coffee is characterized by a pronounced, bitter flavor with notes of nuts and caramel. Its exceptional qualities have led connoisseurs to consider it one of the finest varieties, earning it the nickname Excelso, meaning “sublime” or “elevated.” It’s an ideal coffee for espresso lovers who enjoy a heavier body and a long, bitter finish.
