Description
HALBSTARK – Half the caffeine, all the flavor.
Sometimes you don’t need the full caffeine kick, but still want a delicious coffee. We feel the same way! That’s why we’d like to introduce you to a new member of the family. The 50/50 blend of a decaffeinated coffee from Mexico and our Oaxaca, roasted as an espresso this time, has plenty of flavor.
This full-bodied coffee, with its generous sweetness contrasted by lightly tart fruit notes, makes for a well-rounded, bold espresso. Half the caffeine, all the flavor!
The complex aromas come from the special growing regions of these two coffees. The first is from Columbien Spirit in Colombia, and Thomas from Red Beetle Coffee Lab found the second coffee for us in Mexico. Our Oaxaca comes from the Sierra Sur in the south of the state of the same name, while the decaf was grown in the rather inaccessible and geographically unusual Sierra Mazateca. Both green coffees grow at high altitudes and are community blends. That means several small farms in each region contributed beans from one of their best lots to these coffees.
The Mazateca region is very remote, and the Indigenous language is still spoken there predominantly. Grown at elevations of up to 1,800 meters, the coffee is cultivated on small plots in an extraordinary microclimate where high mountains alternate with deep ravines. Yields are low, and the farms are highly biodiverse thanks to the natural conditions.
One special feature of this decaffeinated coffee is the high quality of the beans, which score at least 84 SCA points. Usually, only lower-quality coffee is selected for decaffeination. Another is the unique Mountain Water Decaf process, which removes 99.9% of the coffee’s natural caffeine. The very clean, mineral-rich water used for this special decaffeination process comes from Mexico’s highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, and is forced through a filtration system that gradually removes the caffeine from the coffee beans without using chemicals.
This natural process preserves all of the coffee’s valuable flavor aromas. Both coffees in our Halbstark blend are washed coffees. Because they grow at high elevations and therefore in a cooler climate, the beans ripen slowly and develop a high density. That’s why this blend is bursting with aromas and has intensely sweet notes.
An easy-to-prepare, juicy espresso that also works great with milk and milk alternatives.
Halbstark for more coffee enjoyment!
