Description
The Montiel Valencia Family is not only heir to a long coffee-growing tradition, but also a pioneer in quality and sustainability in Veracruz. To talk about Finca El Bordo is to talk about the maternal legacy begun by grandfather Luis Valencia. Located in Emiliano Zapata, in the municipality of Cosautlán de Carvajal, this farm is a haven of biodiversity. Coffee varieties such as Típica, Bourbon, and Caturra thrive under advanced shade systems, with trees ranging from pines to mangoes in a symbiosis that honors the ecosystem.
In the same municipality, Fincas San Rafael and Huehuetecpan carry on the legacy of paternal grandfather Rodolfo Montiel. Finca San Rafael stands out for its focus on soil nutrition and its meticulous selection of fruit. Shade trees include chalahuite, orange, loquat, and macadamia, each contributing to a natural balance. Finca Huehuetecpan, on the other hand, located at 1,380 meters above sea level, specializes in conserving varieties such as Mundo Novo, Garnica, and Caturra Amarilla, grown under a completely organic regimen.
Although each farm varies in size, from 3 to 5 hectares, its impact is immense. These small lots are a testament to the Montiel Valencia Family's commitment to quality and sustainability. Carefully calibrated fermentation techniques, slow drying, and innovative methods—such as painting their nails the color of ripe cherries to optimize the harvest—contribute to the perfection we seek in every coffee bean.
Our first interaction with the Montiel Valencia Family took place at the 2018 Cup of Excellence competition. At the time, Tostadora de Cafés Extraordinarios, Almanegra Café's roasting house, was not yet on the map. Even so, they already stood out, earning exceptional placements, presidential awards, and cupping scores of up to 90. Since then, their coffee has been among the first we roast each year and marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership, as they were among the first coffee producers with whom we began building relationships.
The Montiel Valencia Family is our partner in the mission to elevate Mexican coffee and transform the nature of relationships in this industry. Since our first meeting in 2018, they have been pioneers and an inspiration, and they will continue to be beacons of innovation and quality. Every bean of their extraordinary coffee contains a fragment of their rich history, a story we are privileged to share through this coffee.
