About This Coffee

This coffee comes from Muchagara, a washing station operated by Baragwi FCS, the largest coffee cooperative in Kenya. It serves 1,221 smallholders farmers growing at elevations of 1,600–1,800 meters and cultivating SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11 in clay loam soils under moderate temperatures and steady rainfall, providing ideal conditions. Processing follows a standardized fully washed method used across Baragwi’s network of 12 factories. Cherries are hand-sorted, pulped, and fermented overnight before being washed and graded into multiple quality tiers (P1–P3, lights, and pods). Parchment is then dried on raised tables for 8–14 days. Infrastructure upgrades, including tiled washing channels and a shift to metal drying tables, support consistency and efficiency. Operationally, Baragwi emphasizes quality control and knowledge-sharing by rotating factory managers every two years, ensuring uniform processing standards and continuous improvement across al sites.
