Somara from Yemen sets a new standard for drinking coffee
The wonder this coffee inspires in me is renewed with every sip.
How is this possible, you might ask? Nature has made it possible for tasting this coffee to become an art form.
It brings me serenity and inner peace, frees me from the world around me, and makes me feel connected to the earth.
A sacred coffee.
The sensory profile of Somara coffee brings together a wealth of elements, with a wide variety of aromas and flavors. This may be due to three factors:
1.- Its beans have grown on centuries-old trees.
2.- The scarcity of water in the soil.
3.- Archaic farming methods and production systems.
On the nose, it is fresh, suggesting notes of white grapes, berries, and bergamot. On the palate, it has a silky texture, with notes of pomegranate and cherry. A lingering finish brings incense to mind.
I have no doubt that, when I experience this coffee, I associate its deep character with the ancient past.
Who is Somara coffee for?
Somara is a coffee that gives those who drink it a new idea of what coffee can be.
It is unlike any other, as it belongs to a different category.
Any comparison is simply an illusion.
So, because of its distinctive fragrance, aroma, and flavor, I recommend this coffee to anyone with an open mind, a sense of wonder, and an appreciation for access to something exclusive.
To anyone open to trying new things and breaking with routine.
To anyone with the ability to detach from their surroundings and travel in their mind to fantastical places.
To anyone who enjoys life and gives themselves over to pleasure.
And above all, to anyone who embarks on life's projects with an eye toward enjoying the journey and no rush to reach the destination.
How can you enjoy Somara coffee from Yemen?
The best way is to drink it and let the coffee carry you to ecstasy.
We suggest that, at least for your first encounter with Somara, you drink it black (without milk or plant-based drinks) and take your time.
Although I have to admit, I found it delicious when I combined it with fresh cow's milk or an oat drink.
Somara is well suited to brewing with coffee makers; espresso machines, super-automatic machines, Italian coffee makers, or a filter brewer.
Is there more to Somara coffee from Yemen?

Description
Our intuition led us to Yemen
When we began our professional journey in the world of coffee in 2014, our intuition drew our attention to the coffees grown in Yemen.
We had plenty of reasons.
One was that Yemen comes up in many of the answers to some questions we still ask about coffee today:
If its origins lie in Ethiopia, what was the first place in the world where coffee began to be cultivated?
Why is it called Arabica coffee?
Where does Mocha coffee come from?
Where did coffee consumption begin, and how did the drink start to gain popularity?
Who began trading coffee, and by what routes?
From where, and by whom, did coffee begin its journey to new growing regions in the Americas, Asia, and Oceania?
One question lingered in our minds:
We wanted to understand the impact on coffee's sensory qualities of the plant's acclimatization to environmental conditions different from those in Ethiopia, such as those in Yemen.
And from all this, a longing emerged:
To share with our customers the deepest purity of Yemeni coffee.
Bringing it to market: no easy task
It took us eight years to find a way to bring green coffee from Yemen to Cafés Guayacán.
The main reasons were:
Yemen has been engulfed in a brutal war since 2014, making foreign trade difficult.
The routes to the coffee plantations are in very poor condition, making domestic transport difficult.
Coffee production is limited.
Finally, in early 2022, we made a huge step toward our goal when we got in touch with the team at Typica.
They gave us access to samples of Yemeni coffee and connected us with the producers by video call, where they told us about their coffees and their growing and post-harvest processes.
In March, after receiving the samples, roasting them, and assessing them through sensory analysis, we chose the coffee that made our hearts beat and our souls vibrate: Somara.
And today, it is available to anyone who wants to experience the privilege of enjoying it.
