A landlocked country between Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda, Rwanda produces little Arabica, but what it does produce is excellent quality, comparable to Kenyan coffees. Like most African countries, coffee was planted to meet growing demand from the former colonies, where this beverage was widely consumed. By the 1990s, coffee had become the country's main source of income. Today, Rwanda accounts for less than 0.2% of the world's coffee supply. Also, like its neighbor Kenya, given the country's small size, it quickly turned to specialty coffee. The volcanic topography of the African highlands certainly plays a role. The farms here are located at altitudes above 1,300 meters. In addition, the heavy rainfall and intense sun also contribute to the distinctive taste of Rwandan coffees.
