Over the past few decades, coffee has become the country’s specialty. In this mountainous region, with its rugged terrain and steep elevation changes, only 6% of the country’s total area is used for agriculture. However, coffee—Peru’s major crop and the world’s fifth-largest source of Arabica—now supports many families. Most plantations are small or medium-sized. Organic Peru Coffee is grown in the mountainous province of Pasco in central Peru, on the foothills of the Andes, whose peaks can reach over 4,000 meters. The plantations face the Amazon Basin, which provides year-round humidity. They are also cultivated by the Penachies Quechua people at an extreme altitude of 1,800 to 2,200 meters.
