Description
On the palate, expect a delicious sweetness of nuts, nougat, and marzipan, paired with a subtle fruitiness reminiscent of ripe apples. The medium roast gives this coffee a pleasant finish of milk chocolate and waffle. This makes it suitable both for a balanced, sweet espresso and as a harmonious base for milk drinks.
As a nonprofit organization, Unión Majomut brings together around 1,000 families from 35 Indigenous Tsotzil and Tseltal communities in the highlands of Chiapas, at an elevation of 900–1,600 m. Organic coffee is grown on small, family-run farms in the shade among a variety of crops. Organic fertilizers, diverse flora and fauna, and nutrient-rich soil ensure especially healthy coffee plant growth.
The cooperative was founded in 1981 by small coffee producers with the goal of improving members’ living conditions through the production, processing, and marketing of organic coffee and other organic products. Along with food security, environmental protection and the democratic participation of all members are cornerstones of this cooperative.
The holistic improvement of living conditions includes programs to renovate and build homes, improve food self-sufficiency, and promote the economic participation of female members. All programs are shaped by the customs and traditions of the Indigenous communities.
By trading directly with Majomut, producers earn considerably more than they would by selling to middlemen, and their long-term, stable relationship with Süssmund protects them from the volatile fluctuations of commodity markets.
