Description
We invite you to discover our organic Gayo Mountain from Indonesia. This exceptional coffee is a favorite in our shop. You’ll certainly be surprised by its very affordable price, but even more surprised by its intense aromas.
The history of coffee growing in Indonesia
Coffee growing took off in Indonesia during the colonial period. Gayo Mountain has helped make the country a major coffee producer today.
The early history of its beans
It was at the end of the 18th century that the Dutch introduced coffee growing to Indonesia. Passionate botanists, they were curious to see how the plant they had discovered in Ethiopia would grow on the island of Java at first.
Coffee growing then developed thanks to the Dutch merchants’ business acumen. At first, local populations were reluctant to take it up, but the colonists’ control over their land and the money they offered eventually convinced them. During the colonial period, bean production increased for several decades, despite coffee leaf rust.
Its commercial history
The Republic of Indonesia is home to more than 260 million people across its territory. The coffee industry provides a living for many of its workers, as the country is one of the world’s five largest producers every year!
The Netherlands and Indonesia still have a very strong connection when it comes to the coffee trade. With Europeans consuming coffee and Asians producing it, maintaining a trade route was only natural! Indonesian coffee growing has its share of contrasts.
The recent history of Gayo coffee
Since the early 2000s, Indonesia has seen the fastest growth among the major coffee-producing countries. But 90% of its production comes from small farms. Like many of its producer neighbors, it grows a great deal of Robusta. It is sometimes low in quality, but easy to grow. However, the country is also home to extraordinary coffees made from 100% Arabica, such as Gayo Mountain from Indonesia.
The island of Sumatra produces two-thirds of the country’s beans each year, with Robusta in the south and east, and very high-quality Arabica in the north. The regions of Aceh, Mandheling, and Gayo are known for producing the best beans.
Gayo Mountain, a distinctive organic coffee
The prized beans are harvested in the mountainous Gayo Mountain region between October and April.
A full-bodied coffee
From the very first days of our company, we wanted a full-bodied coffee with a bold, direct feel on the palate. That’s why Gayo Mountain is perfect for rounding out our range. Its full body and freshness sweep you away as soon as your lips touch the rim of your cup! The intensity of these beans is deeply satisfying and lingers throughout a long tasting. The aromas of this pure Arabica have notes of red fruit that will delight your taste buds.
Organic Gayo in your cup
You don’t need a ceremony to enjoy coffee, but to appreciate Gayo Mountain from Indonesia, you’ll have to make a little effort. To start, we’ll ask you to skip the sugar. If you like a splash of milk, you’ll have to skip that, too. Finally, be sure to measure your black coffee carefully. As you can see, these beans, like Everest Mountain from Nepal, are packed with flavor, and espresso is the best way to appreciate them. French press and moka pot brewers also let you fully enjoy their intensity. We guarantee that our Gayo Mountain from Indonesia is certified organic and scored 83 by the SCA.
