The Hartmann family is considered one of the pioneers of specialty coffee production in Panama. Their story begins with Alois Strasil Hartmann, born in 1891 in the region of Moravia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (you may understand our particular affinity for this farm!), who laid the foundations for Finca Hartmann, later established by his son, Ratibor Hartmann, in 1940. Alois arrived in Panama in 1912 in search of adventure, started two coffee plantations, and died on May 25, 1970, at the age of 78. His son Ratibor Hartmann transformed the 100 hectares of land and virgin forest he inherited from his father into the Finca Hartmann coffee plantation. In 1966, Ratibor married Dinorah Sandí, originally from Costa Rica. Together they raised five children: Ratibor Jr., Allan, Alexander, Aliss, and Kelly. Today, Finca Hartmann is a family business: every member of the family is passionately involved in its management and plays a different role in the company's cultivation, production, quality control, marketing, and tourism. For them, coffee is a way of life, their culture, their family: a lot of work, but also a lot of love. Their picking staff return every year, as do their buyers, because they appreciate the family's vision: working in harmony with nature and cultivating the land without destroying it.
