Description

Ethiopia is a huge country (as large as Spain and France combined), with great geographic diversity. It features striking contrasts, ranging from the most inhospitable place on earth, the Danakil Depression, to the forests of the Southwest in Yirga Chefe. But if one geographic feature defines Ethiopia, it is its elevation: from the central plateaus to the southern mountains, the average elevation above sea level is 1,330 meters.

The Sidamo region is in southern Ethiopia, on the border with Kenya and Somalia. Sidamo is the name of this mostly mountainous territory, as well as its people and their language. Here, coffee grows wild on the slopes of the highlands or is cultivated in coffee gardens (small plots where each family also grows fruit trees and vegetables) or on larger farms, then processed at washing stations scattered throughout the region. Besides being an important part of the local economy, coffee is also central to the area's social and cultural life. In Sidamo, an invitation to take part in the coffee ceremony—an ancient ritual whose steps are passed down from generation to generation—is a sign of friendship and great respect... and the key to an incomparable experience.

Sidamo coffees come from the highland areas of the country's south, in the Rift Valley, where rainfall is abundant and soils are fertile. These coffees should have a clean cup, with distinct fruity notes, bright acidity, and characteristic sweetness.
