Description
Lalesa – Anaerobic, Gedeb
From the heart of Gedeb, one of Ethiopia’s best coffee regions, we present this special anaerobic lot from Lalesa Washing Station. Fine heirloom coffee grows here on 3.5 hectares, at elevations of 2,150 to 2,200 meters, naturally shaded by enset trees, the Ethiopian “false banana.” The
The annual harvest takes place from December to January. Afterward, this excellent lot is processed anaerobically: the cherries ferment for five days in sealed plastic barrels before drying on raised beds for 13 to 18 days. The coffee is then stored locally until it is taken to the Moplaco warehouse in Gerji, Addis Ababa—from there, it continues by train to Djibouti for export.
Ephtah acquired its own drying station in Lalesa in 2023. With more than 400 drying beds, it is one of the largest in a region counted among Ethiopia’s best growing areas. Ephtah’s ongoing presence allows it to build close, long-term relationships with farmers and maintain full control over processing—the foundation for a range of high-quality processing methods. Seven permanent employees oversee operations, and the team grows to around 130 people during harvest season. Ephtah is also committed to social initiatives: a childcare center has opened in Gedeb for farmers’ families, and some of the women in the region are part of the “Ama Commitment” program.
Look forward to a truly unique cup with notes of strawberry, peach, passion fruit, and black tea.
