Nicaragua El Porvenir – a coffee like its homeland

El Porvenir is a coffee that makes its origins perceptible in every nuance. After washed processing, the rare Maragogype variety unfolds a clear, precise flavor profile: macadamia, grape, and peach give the cup a delicate sweetness and fruity elegance, while cocoa adds depth and a gently chocolatey finish. The acidity is lively but never overpowering, and the body is smooth and silky. Together, they create a harmonious flavor profile that feels light, nuanced, and full-bodied all at once—a coffee distinguished by its calm, balance, and natural sweetness. It is washed.

El Porvenir – sustainability & social responsibility

El Porvenir is produced on the farm of the same name in Nicaragua’s Jinotega Department, in the Yalí Hills at 1,300–1,400 m. The farm has a history spanning more than 60 years and is deeply rooted in the Monzón family tradition. Don Pedro Monzón initially inherited 21 hectares and named the farm “El Porvenir” (The Future). In the 1990s, he expanded the land to around 50 hectares in total, laying the foundation for stable coffee production and the family’s economic security.

El Porvenir stands for more than just quality coffee; it also represents responsibility. During harvest season, the farm employs around 30 pickers, who are paid more than those at neighboring farms and also receive three guaranteed meals a day. The family also places great importance on ecology: once-cleared pastureland has been restored to 21 hectares of forest to prevent erosion, create habitats for animals, and restore water sources. Today, the farm is part of the Sajonia sustainability program and is considered an example of responsible agriculture that takes both community and nature into account.

Growing region: Nicaragua, naturally grown fine coffees

The civil war in the 1980s also had a severe impact on coffee cultivation and exports in Nicaragua. However, coffee cultivation in Nicaragua has since begun to rise again. Nicaragua mainly produces Arabica, including the Bourbon and Pacamara varieties. High-quality coffees come from Matagalpa, Jinotega, and Nuevo Segovia. This coffee usually grows at an altitude of around 1,200 meters on small farms, most of which are family-owned.

The first coffee plantings in Nuevo Segovia took place during the 19th century in the community formerly known as San Francisco and now called Carrizal. In the 1980s, cultivation spread west toward Dipilto and north toward Jalapa. Growth then halted due to the civil war, as many farmers had to leave their farms. After the peace process in 1991, many farmers returned to their work.

Because of its prevailing subtropical climate, Nicaragua offers ideal growing conditions for coffee plants. The best coffee beans thrive in the regions of Jinotega, Matagalpa, and Nueva Segovia. Most farms in Nicaragua are small family businesses. Traditionally, farmers have lacked the resources to use cultivation technologies. Because of the extreme elevations and the associated costs, most farmers forego machinery and pick the coffee cherries by hand. This results in very natural production, and many farmers could often obtain an organic certification if they could afford the certification process.
