Description

We fell in love with coffee from Papua New Guinea at first sip! Its taste and fragrant aromas quickly won us over. Join us on a journey to an exotic destination rich in flavor.

The island of Papua New Guinea

Is there coffee in Papua New Guinea? To be honest, we didn’t know where this wonderful country was when we first became interested in it. Our work as artisan roasters has the benefit of broadening our curiosity.

A crossroads of ethnic groups

This country and its many islands are home to an incredible melting pot of people. The Papuan community is the largest, but its proximity to Australia, Indonesia, and New Zealand brings together a very diverse range of peoples.
The Papuans cherish their ancestors’ rituals, and their lives are still organized around the tribe. To give you an idea of the island’s multiracial culture, it’s worth knowing that Papua New Guinea is the country where the most languages are spoken in the world—nearly 800!

Extreme geography

Papua New Guinea occupies half of the island of New Guinea and several islands to the east, and its terrain is particularly varied. There are dream beaches, but it’s not a paradise for tourists looking to laze around. Its unspoiled natural landscape is more the domain of adventurers and explorers. Tropical rainforest covers a vast area of the land. The mountainous regions, where Mount Wilhelm reaches an altitude of 4,509 meters, are crisscrossed by numerous rivers that flow toward the marshlands.
The tropical climate doesn’t experience major temperature swings, but the monsoon brings abundant rain to the country from December to March.

A dream island for coffee

Our work as roasters lets us make exceptional and surprising taste discoveries. Papua New Guinea offers a unique experience. We’ve made it our mission to introduce this coffee to as many people as possible, and since it’s excellent, everyone loves it! The exceptional natural setting in which the coffee trees grow gives their beans exquisite flavors.

Our first taste of Papua New Guinea coffee

The first time we tasted Papua New Guinea coffee, we couldn’t even locate it on a map. David and Grégoire, our two roasters, were very afraid of botching the first roast of this pure Arabica.
After brushing up on our geography and taking the time to get to know and appreciate this rather temperamental bean, we completely fell for it after pulling an espresso. We didn’t roast this coffee for its exotic appeal, but for the pleasure of tasting it!

Characteristics of our Papua New Guinea coffee:

  • Plantations located at 1,600 meters above sea level
  • Arabica Typica variety
  • Harvested between April and September
  • Hand-picked only
  • Wet-processed (3 days of fermentation)
  • Certified natural sun-drying
  • Hand-sorted
  • SCA score: 81/83

Tasting notes

This full-bodied, well-balanced coffee is ideal if you’re looking for powerful fruit aromas. You may discover delicious red currant notes on the finish. This coffee envelops your palate in its full aromatic intensity. This exceptional tasting bean is a real treat for even the most discerning palates—a far cry from coffee pods.

The demands of a protected region

Farmers in the Wahgi region of Papua New Guinea help perpetuate a traditional culture rooted in tribal expertise.
They constantly work to protect their coffee trees, which also provide refuge for many birds, including the bird-of-paradise, the country’s emblem. The respect these people have for their land and its endemic wildlife inspires us to help them defend these values. Like all the coffees in our selection, their green beans are 100% Arabica: coffee growers refuse to grow Robusta or create blends. This coffee, grown on the Sigri plantation, benefits from favorable climatic conditions, with mild temperatures and particularly abundant rainfall.
