Description

ASOMUJER
Decaf Origin Select Women Producers

ASOMUJER (Asociación de Campesinas del Sur del Huila) is an association of women producers based in the municipality of Timaná in the south of the department of Huila. The group was founded in 2007 by ten women who were looking for new or alternative ways to market their products and earn more for their work. Today, ASOMUJER consists of 75 women producers, including activists, single mothers, and women displaced from other regions of Colombia by conflict. They are constantly striving to produce high-quality coffee, and their goal is to be a competitive, leading organization in the production and marketing of high-quality coffee in the region. ASOMUJER works to make a substantial contribution to improving coffee farmers’ economic returns and quality of life, based on the principles of economic, environmental, and community sustainability.

The so-called “Sugar Cane” process is a unique decaffeination method that uses only natural solvents and no pressure. It is therefore very gentle and easy on the body.
The solvent is made from cane sugar, which is often grown in coffee-growing regions. To make the solvent for the caffeine, sugarcane-based molasses is fermented to produce ethanol. This is mixed with acetic acid to create ethyl acetate. To decaffeinate the green coffee, it is first steamed to open the pores, then treated with a mixture of ethyl acetate and water, which dissolves the caffeine. The caffeine is separated and filtered out. The decaffeinated green coffee is then steamed again to remove any residue. Finally, the green coffee is dried and is ready for export.

This method is also called “The Natural Decaffeination Method,” and E.A. can be found in wine, beer, fruit, food, and various beverages.
