The legend of Baba Budan

More than 400 years ago, the young monk „Baba Budan“ was on a pilgrimage to Mecca when he discovered a dark, sweet drink. It changed his life forever, as its invigorating effect overwhelmed him. He therefore wanted to bring the secret of the drink to his homeland. Although the Arabs guarded the secret of coffee closely, according to legend, Baba Budan hid seven precious seeds beneath his robe and smuggled them to India.

After his return, he planted the seeds in the hills of Chikmagalur, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. This act gave rise to the region's first coffee plantations, founded by a monk and seven coffee beans. To this day, a community of smallholder farmers carefully tends the plantations.

Growing and processing Indian coffee

Today, coffee from India is recognized and appreciated around the world. The beans grow at elevations between 1,000 and 1,450 meters, protected by shade trees and nourished by the tropical climate and high humidity. This gives the beans their distinctive profile, with a delicate aroma that combines fruity and nutty notes. Numerous smallholder farmers hand-pick the beans from various plantations and carefully sort them, producing high-quality Arabica coffee. In addition, wet processing gives the coffee a natural flavor that coffee lovers around the world appreciate.

The story of Baba Budan is a legend, not a historically verified fact.

Preparing India Baba Budan Giri
