Description

Huehue Peaberry comes from San Antonio Huista, in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala, at elevations of 1,550 to 1,650 meters above sea level. In this mountainous area in the northwest of the country, coffee trees grow under the shade of gravileas, chalún, and fruit trees, in clay soils where cool temperatures and abundant rainfall promote the slow, even ripening of the cherries. This terroir comes through in the cup with Huehuetenango’s classic profile: clean, sweet, and marked by a complexity that unfolds gradually.

Behind this lot is Primavera Green Coffee, which works with a network of small-scale producers in the San Antonio Huista area whose lots, because of their size or profile, are better suited to a regional blend than to individual microlots. This model allows each family to sell its harvest at a fair price and invest in its farms and wet mills, while Primavera works alongside them continuously to improve quality and productivity. What makes this lot special is its origin: the Peaberry beans — the result of a natural anomaly in which the cherry develops a single round bean instead of the usual two — were carefully separated at Primavera’s own dry mill in the Santa Rosa region, creating a lot with a singular, highly expressive character.

This lot, consisting of Caturra, Catuaí, and Bourbon varieties, is processed using the washed method at each producer’s individual wet mill. After the cherries are hand-picked, each family depulps, ferments, and washes its coffee separately, then sun-dries it on patios. This carefully managed artisanal process on each farm results in a clean, defined cup with a profile that faithfully reflects the character of Huehuetenango.

In the cup, Huehue Peaberry offers a complex, indulgent, and highly expressive profile. Cocoa leads with a deep, comforting base that defines the coffee’s character from the first sip. Grape adds a dark, juicy, enveloping fruit note that brings sweetness and vibrancy, while melon contributes a soft, fresh, watery fruit note that rounds out the blend. Cream adds a delicate, silky smoothness, caramel brings a warm, integrated sweetness, and pecan closes the profile with a roasted, dry, and deeply indulgent note that adds depth and a lingering finish. With medium body and medium acidity, it delivers a complex, rounded, and remarkably expressive cup.

Scoring 84 points and roasted specifically for espresso, Huehue Peaberry shines under pressure: the cocoa and caramel intensify and take center stage, grape brings a fruity acidity that balances the cup, and pecan and cream add a smoothness and depth rarely found in an espresso. A coffee for those seeking complexity, sweetness, and a profile that surprises with every sip.

Huehue Peaberry is an expression of Guatemalan coffee in its most singular form: a regional blend built around community, a bean that nature makes different, and a cup that brings tradition, complexity, and character together in perfect harmony.
