Description

Finca Bella Vista – 100% Organic Arabica
Available again soon!

We have been sourcing coffee from Finca Bella Vista through Meámbar Premium Coffee for several years now. The coffee is organically grown and has also been certified organic since this season!

The idea for this family project was born in Honduras in 2014. Carola Larios and her brother Christian Larios have known coffee farming since childhood; their parents owned a small coffee plantation in the mountains of Copán.

The siblings trade directly with selected and reliable farmers in Honduras who own farms at elevations of 1,500 m and produce only “Strictly High Grown” (SHG) coffee. Quality is tied to better compensation, and the farm owner is paid fairly and directly on site. Christian Larios lives in Honduras and is the farmers’ point of contact. He visits the farms and is responsible for on-site quality control.
For Meámbar, high quality means manual hand-picking, using organic-compatible products against Roya or Broca (pests), a maximum of 1–2 varieties per lot, sustainable supply, environmentally friendly cultivation, and organic fertilization.

Finca Bella Vista is about 20 minutes from Marcala and is located in Las Delicias, San José, La Paz. It is operated by Sara Victoria Vásquez Perdomo and Christian Ramon Larios Schomburg—they founded a company together.

The farm is located at an elevation of 1,400–1,465 m and covers a total area of 30 Manzanas (20.92 hectares): coffee is currently grown on 17 Manzanas (11.85 hectares), 8 Manzanas (5.58 hectares) are being prepared for cultivation, and the rest of the farm is a processing facility. The Arabica varieties red and yellow Catuaí are grown here. The plants are 5–8 years old. Alongside the coffee trees, many other timber trees (pines, cedars, mahogany, sweetgum, Gravileos, Guamas, Amate, Tatascan) and fruit trees (orange, Persian lemon, avocado, banana, mandarin, and lime trees) grow on the farm.

The farm has 20 permanent employees, with 70 pickers joining for the harvest (November through March). The coffee cherries (as well as the harvest from other producers) are wet-processed at the farm’s own washing station. 150 bags of exportable green coffee are produced each year.

History of the farm

Finca Bella Vista was purchased and farmed in the 1960s by Sara’s grandfather, Don Emilio Vásquez Hernández. He grew Arabica coffee and took particular care to maintain the farm’s water sources. Sara’s father, Don Cristino Vásquez Alvares, inherited it from Don Emilio. Don Cristino planted more timber and fruit trees.

Sara, now the third generation, purchased the farm from her father. To finance the purchase and initially manage the farm, she took out loans from local financial institutions. Due to low green coffee prices in previous years, Sara was unfortunately unable to meet her financial obligations. Sara was forced to refinance at higher interest rates. Her debts kept growing.

Along with the heavy debts, a difficult divorce process began two years ago. She felt compelled to make a decision that would improve her poor financial situation. She thought of moving to Spain and leaving her children in Honduras; she planned to support her family financially from Spain. A week before paying for her plane ticket, she met Christian Larios, who suggested a business idea. Sara and Christian jointly founded AGROINDUSTRIAS CAFÉ SAN JOSE, AGROCAFE, on July 1, 2022. The company’s main focus is producing high-quality green coffee, processing it themselves, and exporting it to Germany (a direct and secure market at fair prices).

The company now has its own export license in addition to its processing facility.

They achieved good results last year and want to continue growing. Sara has not left her children or Honduras, and as she says: “Thank God I have found a source of income that allows me to meet my financial obligations and provide for my family.”

Sara has 3 children, ages 17, 16, and 12: one boy and two girls. Sara is 44 years old.
