Gallito de las Rocas, Peru - Washed

We've been finding some really lovely coffees coming out of Peru lately, and Gallito de las Rocas is a good example of why we're paying more attention to this origin. It's exceptionally smooth, with a gentle sweetness and the kind of balance that makes it easy to keep coming back to.

This is our first time working with the farming communities behind Gallito de las Rocas in San Ignacio, northern Peru. We've been particularly impressed by the quality coming from this region, where varieties like Caturra are producing coffees with plenty of character and complexity. It's an origin we think deserves a little more recognition.

Behind the coffee

Gallito de las Rocas takes its name from the Andean cock-of-the-rock, a distinctive bird found in the forests of northern Peru. The coffee comes from San Ignacio in Cajamarca, a mountainous region surrounded by protected forests and national parks, where fertile soils and varied microclimates create excellent conditions for growing coffee.

Since 2019, the Gallito de las Rocas project has brought together smallholder farmers from the region, working alongside Caravela's PECA team. Through ongoing support with farming and processing practices, the project focuses on improving coffee quality while building stronger opportunities for the producers involved.

We're excited to begin working with this group and to explore more of what San Ignacio has to offer. For us, Gallito de las Rocas is a reminder of just how much quality and character there is to discover in Peru, and we're looking forward to sharing more coffees from this region in the future.
