Description

Our mission is simple: to bring you exceptional coffee under the best possible conditions.

Our organic espresso Adorno is a VAN-DYCK classic from the very beginning. It has been part of our roastery since 2010 and is still the first choice of many baristas. Certified organic, fairly traded, and gently roasted, it brings together what matters most to us in coffee: high-quality green coffee, careful processing, and authentic roasting craftsmanship from Cologne.

The coffee cherries are carefully hand-picked, selected, and sorted by size. After all, the quality we later taste in the cup begins where the coffee grows.

Origin & Blend

  • The Arabica beans from the highlands of Mexico and Ethiopia bring finesse and delicate aromas to the blend.

  • High-quality Robusta from Uganda, from the ACPCU Cooperative, gives Adorno its strength, body, and dense crema.

  • Together, they make a blend of 75% Arabica and 25% Robusta, which has distinguished Adorno for many years.

Flavor Profile

Bold, delicately spicy, and harmoniously balanced—Adorno has a rounded, full-bodied flavor profile.

As an espresso, it shows its intense, spicy side. In a cappuccino, it has enough strength to preserve its character even when paired with milk.

Our Recommendation for the Food Service Industry

Thanks to its expressive yet balanced character, Adorno is ideal for professional use in cafés, restaurants, and coffee bars.

The Roasting Process—Here's How It Works:

We roast Adorno fresh almost every day at our roastery on Schanzenstraße in Cologne. Our roasting team makes sure to catch the perfect moment for the coffee's aromas to develop optimally. We tailor the roast profile to each bean variety, because every bean has its own character! Much like wine, every coffee tastes different depending on the country and region where it is grown, the grower, and how the crop is tended.

We roast specialty coffee exclusively. Want to know what that is?

Specialty coffee refers to the outstanding quality of green coffee grown in specific geographic regions and under unique climatic conditions. These special circumstances result in distinctive flavor profiles that make each coffee unique. Organic Espresso Adorno is fairly traded, gently roasted, and belongs to the specialty coffee category.

The term was first coined by Erna Knutsen in the late 1970s; she was a pioneer in the coffee world. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) developed a system for evaluating coffee quality that takes both physical and sensory characteristics into account. During the physical evaluation, we carefully select out defective beans. During sensory analysis, also known as cupping, we taste the coffee for a range of flavors and rate it on a scale of up to 100 points.
