About Our DECAF

One of our regular customers orders decaf for the first time? For us, that's always a little sign that there might be a baby on the way. And this coffee really is an excellent choice for that: decaffeinated—and still delightful.

Its full-bodied, sweet, nuanced flavor makes this coffee unique—caffeine or no caffeine.

Decaf can be brewed as filter coffee or espresso. We developed it after more and more requests came in from cafes and restaurants, as well as pregnant customers looking for a coffee alternative without caffeine.

We ultimately chose a Colombian coffee, the only one in our lineup without any Kenyan beans—but in this case, too, part of the proceeds goes to our Crossroads social project.

Here are answers to the most important questions about decaf:

How do I brew Decaf?

Decaf's distinctive character comes through both in filter coffee brewing methods and as espresso. We recommend using 200 ml of water for 12 g of coffee and letting it cool briefly after brewing. For espresso machine preparation, we recommend using 8 to 9 g and a 25-second extraction time.

How is coffee decaffeinated?

The coffee was decaffeinated using ethyl acetate. This is a “natural” solvent derived from cane sugar that removes over 97% of the caffeine. Ethyl acetate residue is below 30 ppm, so the coffee is free of any foreign odors or flavors. Only the coffee's lovely sweet, slightly fruity notes remain.
