Description

As coffee exporters in Africa, we naturally dream of working with Uganda. The Wugar Bukonso region has created a marvel for our coffee machine.

Wugar Bukonzo organic coffee, an African marvel

Since we began roasting, Africa has provided us with extraordinary coffees. Uganda is no exception, thanks to the richness of its terroir.

A wonderful region

Uganda is bordered by two prestigious mountains: Mount Elgon, which reaches into Kenya, and the Rwenzori Mountains, near the Republic of the Congo. The Rwenzori region lies at the heart of a favorable microclimate, thanks to the abundant rainfall flowing down from the mountains. The protected soils at the heart of the coffee plantations provide ideal conditions for coffee plants to grow. To be honest, the quality of Uganda’s whole-bean coffees perfectly reflects the richness of its soils. Several factors are crucial to coffee growing:

  • Climate
  • Altitude
  • Humidity
  • Soil type
  • Sun exposure
  • Natural soil irrigation

Uganda offers us a remarkable bean

The Wugar Bukonso cooperative is located at an altitude of 1,400 to 2,100 meters and brings together hundreds of small-scale farmers. It’s a real pleasure to introduce you to this coffee grown in Uganda. The Wugar Bukonso region produces an Arabica with sparkling acidity that gives it a remarkable taste. The taste buds at the tip of your tongue will immediately come alive! This lively bean gives off aromas of chocolate and hazelnuts. Your ground coffee will have an intense aroma and a pronounced flavor. Your cups of coffee will surprise even the most knowledgeable coffee lovers. Like the neighboring Kenyan bean with its fruity profile and passion fruit aromas that we roast, this Arabica bursts with flavor…

Ethics at the heart of this project in Uganda

When you already work with twenty-five coffees from twenty-five different countries, you have to search hard to find an original bean. We liked the idea of roasting Wugar Bukonso coffees and bringing out their full potential because an ethical approach was at the heart of this project.

Coffee growing in service of Ugandans

To continue expanding our selection of specialty and exceptional coffees, we seek ethical partnerships with responsible cooperatives. Uganda and the Wugar Bukonso region have endured dark years of civil war. A somewhat audacious project was born: inviting residents to lay down their arms and take up coffee farming! What might once have seemed impossible is now a reality. Nearly one hundred producer groups are part of this remarkable project. Coffee and its economy have become the greatest allies of peace. Les Torréfacteurs Français are proud to contribute to this wonderful initiative in their own way.

Our commitment to Uganda

For nearly thirty years, Uganda has been a country focused on organic agriculture. This represents a genuine commitment from all economic stakeholders in the agricultural sector. Customs allow as few chemical fertilizers as possible into the country. Public awareness of environmental issues is among the highest in the world. From the very beginning, we have sought to make our business relationships with coffee-producing countries as ethical as possible. Our policy is to provide a fair income to everyone in the supply chain through certified organizations such as Max Haavelar. When we were offered the opportunity to support an ambitious project in Uganda, we were immediately drawn to it. Our partnership with the Wugar Bukonso region began in 2021, and we are certain it will continue for many years to come.
