700 kilometers off Madagascar, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, a small French island is the birthplace of one of coffee’s most fascinating varieties.

On the former island of Bourbon, now La Réunion, Laurina, or Bourbon Pointu, emerged. So rare and difficult to grow that it nearly disappeared from its place of origin.

Its uniqueness is also written in its genetics: it is one of the cultivated Arabica coffee varieties with the lowest naturally occurring caffeine content, without being decaffeinated.

For centuries, its story has been tied to rarity and distinction. Today, Café Guayacán offers the opportunity to discover it through Alharaca, a Laurina grown in the mountains of Colombia.

Available units: 40

100 grams in a collectible tin. A rare opportunity to hold a variety whose story nearly faded away.

Posted on Google Pavel Shestopalov Real quality specialty coffee Posted on Google tim This is the best coffee shop in Madrid. The owner Enrique makes absolutely amazing‑tasting coffee, and he’s incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can really taste floral and fruity notes in the brews. As tourists with only very basic Spanish, he even enthusiastically recommended lots of local sights for us. Coming across this coffee shop in Madrid is the luckiest thing that happened to me on this trip. Thank you so much. I will absolutely be back. Posted on Google Jonathan Valdez This coffee made my last day here in Madrid. They have a great milk selection for those not partaking in dairy. They have a walk up window and you can order inside as well. This is a gem. Posted on Google Diego Estrella (Starty) I have to say the coffee was incredible. The concentrate was perfectly noticeable, and the touch of lavender made for a very balanced contrast. The service was also excellent: everyone was super kind and pleasant. And the coffee I took home… it’s amazing. It’s a honey that fascinated me, and I’m really enjoying it. I’ll definitely have to come back sometime. Posted on Google L. Rodríguez Albarrán We did the “barista for a day” experience, and it was a great choice. Enrique and Reina share their passion for coffee as soon as you walk through the door. It’s an incredible coffee experience, with care and patience. From the moment you walk in, you can tell it’s a different kind of specialty coffee shop, with the espresso machine open to the bar so you can see how they make the coffee from the moment you choose. It’s delicious. We’ll also come back to buy the coffees they roast themselves. It’s hard to find anything similar in Madrid. Posted on Google Ana Cuacos We did the Barista for a Day experience. The atmosphere was very welcoming and fun, and we learned a lot. The coffee was delicious!

What you might want to know before trying it

Orders begin being processed as they come in. Orders placed on Friday, during the weekend, or on a holiday begin being processed on the next business day. One of our guarantees is the freshness of our product. Since Alharaca has undergone a freezing process to preserve its qualities, it will come with its roast date and best-by date.
We keep our coffees whole bean and recommend getting them that way because they retain most of their sensory qualities. If you need it ground, select your grind in the dropdown, and we’ll grind it precisely so your coffee maker can extract it properly. Write to us on WhatsApp (via the link on the website) or email us at info@cafesguayacan.com and tell us how you make your coffee and how you like to drink it. We’ll recommend the coffees that suit you best.

How to prepare Alharaca in an AeroPress

Alharaca deserves a preparation method that lets you appreciate its sensory characteristics.

At Café Guayacán, we recommend starting with an AeroPress coffee maker, a versatile method that lets you control variables such as grind size, temperature, and extraction time.

Our suggested starting recipe is designed to explore its fruity profile.

AeroPress recipe for Alharaca

Ingredients and equipment

  • 9.5 g whole-bean Alharaca.
  • 1,500 g filtered water.
  • Water at 86 °C.
  • Medium-fine grind.
  • AeroPress and paper filter.

Preparation

  1. Rinse the paper filter with hot water and place the AeroPress on a sturdy cup.
  2. Grind the 9.5 grams of Alharaca just before preparing the drink.
  3. Add the ground coffee to the AeroPress.
  4. First pour in about 25 grams of water, wait 15 seconds, then continue until you reach 200 grams.
  5. Stir gently and place the plunger on top to reduce dripping during the infusion.
  6. After about 1 minute and 45 seconds from the start of the pour, begin pressing slowly and steadily.
  7. Finish the extraction at around 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

This recipe is a starting point. You can adjust the grind, time, and temperature depending on what you taste in the cup.

A different way to taste it

Take your time before drinking.

First, bring the cup close and enjoy the aroma.

Then, take a small sip.

Let the coffee cool a little and taste it again.

Pay attention to how the sensations evolve.

With a 100-gram tin of Alharaca, you can make eight preparations using this recipe.

Eight opportunities to explore the same variety through your own senses.

What is Laurina or Bourbon Pointu coffee?

It’s an Arabica coffee variety that emerged from a natural mutation of Bourbon. It was historically selected on the island of La Réunion, formerly called Bourbon.

It is distinguished by its compact plant, pointed seeds, and naturally low caffeine content.

Why is Laurina coffee so rare?

Because it produces low yields, requires specific care, and can have high growing costs. As a result, supply is limited, and it is not usually part of many roasters’ regular offerings.

Is Laurina the lowest-caffeine coffee in the world?

That cannot be stated definitively.

Laurina is one of the best-known cultivated Arabica varieties for its naturally low caffeine content. However, there are other coffee plants and species with lower concentrations.

Is Alharaca decaffeinated coffee?

No. Alharaca is a Laurina variety, which naturally has less caffeine than many conventional Arabica coffees.

It has not undergone a decaffeination process.

How much caffeine does Alharaca contain?

Scientific literature generally places Laurina at around 0.5–0.8% caffeine by weight of the dry bean, although this can vary.

We don’t have a specific caffeine analysis for the Alharaca lot.

Where is Alharaca grown?

At Finca Buenos Aires, located in Filo de Chillurco, Pitalito, Huila Department, Colombia, at an altitude of 1,800 meters.

The producer is Edier Perdomo Claros.

What tasting notes does Alharaca have?

According to the origin technical sheet, its sensory profile features notes of sweet mango and dried fruit, medium body, and medium-low acidity.

Why is Alharaca frozen after roasting?

To slow oxidation and aromatic deterioration during storage.

Low-temperature storage can help protect its sensory characteristics, especially when the coffee is handled properly and protected from moisture and oxygen.

What is the best method for preparing Alharaca?

We recommend starting with AeroPress because it lets you control different variables and explore its sensory profile. It can also be prepared using other filter methods.
