Description

FARM HISTORY

Tendi comes from smallholder farms around Lintong Nihuta, on the high plateau southwest of Lake Toba in North Sumatra. The lake sits in the caldera of an ancient supervolcano, and the surrounding highlands have deep volcanic soil and cool, misty conditions.

Coffee here is grown by Batak families on small plots, often alongside other crops. Cherries are hand-picked and pulped on the farm. They’re partially dried and then hulled while the beans are still moist.

This is Giling Basah, Sumatra’s signature wet-hulling process, and it gives the cup its full body, low acidity, and earthy, spiced depth.

Lintong’s altitude and cooler climate add a touch more clarity and aromatics than other Sumatran regions. That’s where the lemongrass comes through.

The variety mix includes Sigararutang, Ateng, and Onan Ganjang, a local selection named after a village in the Humbang highlands, all grown alongside older Typica stock.

CypherED Profile

In Batak tradition, Tendi is the soul, the life force that lives in every person. This Sumatran coffee has its own spirit.

Tobacco gives it warmth and depth. A lift of citrus adds the brightness that you find in a North Sumatra coffee, and caramel sweetness ties it all together in the finish.

It’s grown by smallholder farmers in the highlands of Lintong, just south of Lake Toba, and wet-hulled in the traditional Sumatran way. The result is a bold, layered flavor with a little more life to it.
