A Caramelised-Apple Medium Roast for Espresso, Milk and Filter

Tarte Tatin is a medium roast blend of El Salvador and Colombia, roasted to order in Kuala Lumpur. It opens on soft stewed apple, brings a bittersweet marmalade brightness through the middle and settles on milk chocolate. Sweet and rounded, with enough lift to stay interesting black and enough body to carry milk.

Tasting Notes

Stewed Apple · Marmalade · Milk Chocolate
Cooked-apple sweetness up front, a gentle citrus lift and a smooth milk chocolate finish. Medium body, gentle acidity.

About This Coffee

The El Salvador is a washed Red Bourbon. It carries the apple and the milk chocolate. The Colombia is a washed smallholder lot, which adds the orange and dried-fruit depth that reads as marmalade.

Both are roasted medium in our Kuala Lumpur roastery. Medium keeps the apple soft and the chocolate smooth, so the cup is forgiving: easy as a first espresso, good in a flat white or an iced latte, and pleasant on filter.

How to Brew Tarte Tatin

Espresso 1:2 ratio, 18g in for 36g out in 27-30 seconds
Filter 1:15 ratio, 18g coffee to 270ml water at 93°C

If your espresso tastes sharp or thin, grind a little finer; if it tastes harsh or dry, grind coarser. For filter, dial the grind to land a 3 to 4 minute brew.

How Much Coffee Is in a Bag?

At 15g a cup, a 300g bag makes about 20 cups, or RM2.25 a cup. Two 300g bags make about 40 cups at about RM2.12 a cup, and the 1kg bag stretches to about 66 cups at about RM1.95 a cup. The recipes above use 18g for a fuller cup, so expect a few cups fewer if you brew that way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tarte Tatin better for espresso or filter?
It works both ways. As espresso at 1:2 the apple and chocolate come through sweet and round, and it holds up well in milk. As filter at 1:15 the marmalade note has more room.

What does Tarte Tatin taste like?
Soft stewed apple up front, a bittersweet marmalade note through the middle and a smooth milk chocolate finish.

Why is it called Tarte Tatin?
For the way it drinks: soft, caramelised apple first, then a bittersweet citrus note and a smooth finish, like the French upside-down apple tart. The sweetness comes from the beans; there are no syrups or flavourings.

How fresh is the coffee?
We roast to order in Kuala Lumpur, and every bag ships within 24 hours of roasting. Beans taste best from 5 to 7 days after the roast date printed on the bag and stay good to about day 30.

Do you offer free shipping?
Free shipping within Peninsular Malaysia on orders from RM80, and East Malaysia from RM150.
