Mother/Daughter: Apex Blend

Mother / Daughter Blend is first and foremost a story of cooperation and legacy within the lineage of a very important Honduran producer family we’ve had the pleasure to buy from for 7 years now. Showcasing two different coffees from Miriam “Betty” Perez (Mother) and Grasia Peñalba (Daughter) in one blend is our way of honoring a very important, very timely topic amongst coffee–producing farmers these days, which is passing of coffee growing traditions from one generation to the next.

Mellow, balanced notes of almond, honeysuckle, and blueberry charm in this delicately floral and creamy blend of two star producers’ coffees. Betty’s natural process coffee, with its elegant, floral ester, wraps Mother / Daughter Blend in a coating, rich sweetness, while Grasia’s honey process coffee balances those heavier flavors with mellow accents of brown sugar nuttiness. The brewed result is a complex light roast with measured but vibrant acidity, smooth body, and a plethora of understated, sweet notes.

Roasted individually, each coffee is quite different. Blended together, the coffee becomes greater than the sum of its parts, reflecting the intergenerational passing of knowledge, skills, and above all, passion. The story you often hear from coffee farmers longs for a transfer of care from one generation to the next. But the motivation to farm coffee, a labor-intensive and increasingly risky calling, is a hard sell for the younger generation that, more and more, seeks the opportunities awaiting them abroad. With Mother / Daughter Blend, we are reminded that strong bonds are worth honoring and emboldening, and shouldn’t be taken for granted.
