Description

Moaʻula ʻOhana: A Floral, Fruit-Forward Kaʻū Espresso Blend

Wildflower aromatics, blackberry sweetness, and a silky finish. Moaʻula ʻOhana is a vibrant, medium-roast, 100% Kaʻū espresso blend. At the farm, wine-yeast-fermented Lempira is blended with washed Catuai coffee. The result is a coffee that’s elegant and complex in the straight shot, and extravagantly sweet and creamy in milk.

Coffee Review awarded this 100% Kaʻū coffee 96 points, including a 10 in the with-milk category, and placed it at No. 30 in its Top 50 Coffees of 2025—one of just four espresso blends to earn 96 points that year.

Rooted in ʻOhana

ʻOhana, a Hawaiian word meaning family, tells the story of a blend that began with our lead roaster, Lora, and her family, exploring what they could create from the coffee they grow. Moaʻula, the road leading to their farm, reflects the connection between family, place, and the coffee they cultivate.

That collaboration brought us our first opportunity to feature a Lempira coffee—a variety whose character takes on another dimension through carefully guided fermentation. Lora paired it with washed Catuai, then developed a roast that brings the two into balance.

Wine Yeast That Shapes Character

Fermentation happens when yeasts and bacteria break down sugars in the fruit surrounding the coffee seed. The choice of microbes—and how the process is managed—can influence the coffee’s eventual aroma and flavor.

For this lot, the Lempira cherries are inoculated with a Chardonnay wine yeast and held in buckets for 24 to 48 hours under controlled conditions. Introducing a chosen yeast gives the producers more control over fermentation than relying on naturally occurring microbes alone.

This is yeast-fermented coffee, with no added flavoring. The wine yeast helps shape the coffee’s character during processing; the fruit and floral notes are part of the resulting cup.

Expressive on Its Own, Beautiful With Milk

As a straight shot, Moaʻula ʻOhana is stellar, distinctive and versatile: opening with wildflower and blackberry aromas, a gentle brightness, and a silky, clean finish. This 100% Kaʻū coffee is elegant and complex in the straight shot, or extravagantly sweet and creamy in milk.

Roasted to Order in Hilo

We roast Moaʻula ʻOhana to order in Hilo, and every bag carries its roast date. Pull it as a straight shot, build a cortado, or pour it into your favorite espresso drink with milk.
