Perfect for the true Kona connoisseur, Kona Peaberry is a small, round bean that develops alone inside the cherry instead of in the usual pair, giving it a denser concentration of flavor and aroma. At only about 5% of a harvest, it is rare by nature.

Hand-harvested, milled in small batches, and roasted to order, our specialty-grade Kona Peaberry is available in medium-light and medium-dark roasts, both rated 94 points by Coffee Review.

The Four-Leaf Clover of Coffee

Open most coffee cherries and you find two seeds pressed flat against each other. Now and then there is only one, with no neighbor to share the space, and it grows small and round: a peaberry. It happens at random, on any tree. However hard farmers have tried, they have never been able to grow peaberries on purpose, which makes a bag of true Kona Peaberry a little like a four-leaf clover: rare, spontaneous, and hard to find.

Specialty Grade

We have worked with the same family farm in Kona for more than a decade, and we are exacting about quality, harvest after harvest. Our Kona Peaberry is specialty grade, meaning a certified Q Grader scored the green coffee 80 points or higher. It is Kona Typica, the variety that has grown in Kona for more than a century. As everywhere on Hawaiʻi Island, the ground is too steep for machines, so ripe cherries are picked by hand, one at a time.

Small Batch

Our Kona Peaberry is wash processed, meaning the fruit skin and flesh are removed before the beans dry, for a clean expression of Kona’s terroir, climate, and Typica variety. Milled and graded in small batches shortly before roasting, the peaberries are sifted through screens on a coffee grader to separate the round beans from the flat ones.

Which roast should you choose?

This delightful coffee is offered at a medium-light and medium-dark roast. Choosing the best Kona Peaberry coffee for you comes down to how much roast character or brightness you typically prefer. Choose the medium-light to taste light caramel and fruit notes most clearly, or the medium-dark for more body and a darker chocolate notes.
