Description

Jam Jammy

Gititu Factory is located near Karatina in Nyeri County on the slopes of Mount Kenya. The factory is known for producing Kenyan coffee through a traditional washed process that highlights the clarity and vibrant character of the region. Its coffees reflect the distinctive growing conditions of Kenya’s central highlands, where altitude and climate contribute to the development of complex flavour profiles.

After harvesting, the coffee cherries are pulped to separate the beans from the fruit. The beans undergo fermentation before being washed and soaked in clean water to remove the remaining mucilage. They are then spread across raised drying tables for several days until the desired moisture level is reached. This careful approach to processing helps preserve the coffee’s clean character while developing its bright acidity and layered fruit notes. Once dried, the parchment coffee is sent to a private mill for further preparation.

Gititu is a classic washed Kenyan coffee that stays true to the character we love from this origin. Brewed by hand, it opens with a burst of rhubarb and raspberry acidity before settling into a black tea finish. As espresso, the profile shifts towards the sweet vegetal character of Japanese leeks, balanced by moderate grapefruit and pomelo notes. With milk, it takes on a softer expression of baby carrot sweetness and a comforting chocolate milkshake finish. This may not be the easiest coffee for newcomers, but for those who enjoy exploring the more distinctive side of specialty coffee, Gititu offers plenty to discover.

The Producer

Gititu Factory is part of the Aghuti Farmers Cooperative Society alongside Thageini and Kagumo. The cooperative brings together around 800 smallholder farmers who share the same washing station, locally known as a factory. During harvest, farmers deliver freshly picked cherries to Gititu each day, where every delivery is carefully inspected and weighed before joining the collective harvest. Situated on the slopes of Mount Kenya near Karatina in Nyeri, Gititu reflects the close relationship between smallholder farming and the cooperative system that has shaped Kenyan coffee for generations.

The coffee is made up of some of Kenya’s most recognised varieties, including SL28, SL34 and Ruiru 11. SL28 was selected in the 1930s and remains highly regarded for its drought tolerance and complex sweetness, often carrying a distinctive wine-like character. SL34 is known for its depth, rich body and balanced acidity, while Ruiru 11 was developed for higher productivity and stronger resistance to disease. Together, these varieties contribute to the structure and character that Kenyan coffee is known for.

Beyond the varieties themselves, Gititu is a story of shared responsibility. Hundreds of farmers bring their harvest to the same place, working through a system where quality is measured collectively but begins with each individual delivery. The factory also maintains seepage tanks to treat wastewater and protect the streams that eventually feed the Chania River. It is a small reflection of the wider Kenyan coffee ecosystem, where land, community and careful cultivation come together in the cup.
