Ibonia Estate AA — Kiambu, Kenya

Ibonia is a long‑standing family estate in Kiambu, just outside Nairobi, and one of those places that reminds you why Kenyan coffee is so revered. Sitting at around 1,700 metres, with much of the land preserved as natural forest, it offers the slow, cool maturation that SL28 and SL34 thrive on. This fully washed AA lot shows exactly what we look for from Kiambu: precision, clarity and lift.

In the cup, it’s bright without being sharp. We taste redcurrant and raspberry up front, moving into a sweet, muscat‑grape character and a gentle citrus line. There’s a delicate floral aroma and a long, clean finish. It’s a beautifully composed profile that makes for a vibrant, refreshing filter.

What we love about this lot at Fjord is the balance: that classic red‑fruit snap anchored by ripe, grape‑like sweetness, all carried on a very clean, transparent structure. The extended soak used after washing contributes to that extra polish in the cup, giving you definition without sacrificing sweetness.

Grown mainly from SL28 and SL34, this is a textbook expression of these varieties in Kiambu’s volcanic soils. “AA” here refers to screen size (the larger beans) rather than quality per se, though in this case it accompanies a particularly focused and elegant flavour profile.

Roasted for filter to highlight acidity and aromatics. If you enjoy classic Kenyan profiles with a modern sense of balance, this is a compelling example.
