Description

Costa Rica lies in southern Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast. Thanks to its excellent geographic and climatic conditions, coffee cultivation began spreading early on. The first coffee plants arrived from Cuba in 1779. Coffee has been exported since 1820. Today, Costa Rica accounts for about 3% of global coffee exports, making coffee exports an important part of the economy. The country is also notable for being one of the developing nations that has succeeded in bringing coffee cultivation together with modern science, agricultural technology, and economic demands. At the same time, Costa Rican highland coffees are among the best in the world, since the soil and climate offer favorable conditions alongside the technology. As a result, Costa Rican coffee grown at elevations between 900 and 1,800 m has a delicate acidity. The coffees are blue-green to blue, large-beaned, and slender, with almost no remnants of silverskin. When roasted, they have a neutral taste, while remaining mild and full-bodied, with a delicate aroma.
