Description

After tourism and tea, coffee is the East African country’s third most important source of foreign currency. Coffee is grown on both 1,300 large plantations and by 600,000 small-scale farmers organized into cooperatives. These farmers account for around 60% of the country’s coffee harvest and grow coffee alongside crops important to their own diets, such as corn and beans. In Kenya, coffee is sold at auction, so exporters cannot source their coffee directly from farm owners or cooperatives. Grown at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 meters, Kenyan coffee is an excellent highland product. Harvesting takes place twice a year: the early harvest, or “fly crop,” runs from May to July, while the main harvest runs from November to January. Around 90,000 to 95,000 tons are produced each year. However, drought can affect the harvest. Plant diseases such as coffee rust, as well as the coffee berry borer, are also a problem in Kenya. A new coffee plant, “Ruiru 11,” which is resistant to disease, grows quickly, and produces good yields, is now being planted more widely. This variety currently accounts for around 5% of the coffee harvest. By 2020, it is expected to account for 100%.
